They are the first ray of light in the city’s early morning. While streets and alleys are still shrouded in mist and shadows, sanitation workers have quietly swept away dust. Their grey-orange uniforms are the city’s most unadorned yet striking color. They are not eloquent, but they guard the city’s cleanliness and beauty with their daily labor.

On Chongyang Festival, a day for “respecting the elderly,” the Shenzhen COSUN volunteer service team, with the theme “Warm Chongyang Festival, Love for Sanitation Workers,” visited Pingshan and Longgang streets, bringing festive greetings and practical supplies to frontline sanitation workers aged 60 and above.

In Pingshan Fumin Park, the autumn air was slightly cool, and the sun was just right. Volunteers carried bags filled with care, delivering daily necessities such as milk and laundry detergent to the sanitation workers, along with festive blessings. Laughter filled the air during the subsequent “Chongyang Knowledge Quiz,” and COSUN’s customized small gifts added to the joy. Finally, volunteers presented Chongyang greeting cards filled with blessings. A sanitation worker smiled and said, “Someone remembers us, and it warms my heart.”

At the Longgang Nanlian Community Party-Mass Service Center, representatives from the COSUN volunteer team expressed their respect to the sanitation workers. The event also began with a “Chongyang Knowledge Quiz,” and the atmosphere was lively. During the “exchange and interaction” session, volunteers and sanitation workers met face-to-face, listening to them recount their hardships and small joys. Some said that contributing to society felt fulfilling and satisfying; others said they felt very warm to receive the city’s care.

At the end of the event, volunteers once again presented supplies and greeting cards. In just an hour, communication, laughter, and emotion flowed through the community. The festival may be short, but the warmth endures. Those orange figures remain the city’s most gentle scenery, making Shenzhen a brighter and warmer city.
