Hotel Wayfinding Signage Integrating Coastal Heritage, Luxury Hospitality and Smart Wayfinding

Project name: Qingdao Haitian Hotel

Time: 2020

Quick Answer

Qingdao Haitian Hotel is a five-star seaside hotel in the cultural core of Qingdao, combining premium hospitality, dining, conferences and leisure facilities. For this landmark hospitality project, COSUN SIGN developed and fabricated a customized hotel wayfinding signage system covering the entrance, hotel lobby signs, guestroom areas, restaurants, conference facilities, safety signage, electronic room signage and selected exterior zones.

The signage system translates the hotel’s coastal identity into a contemporary visual language through refined metalwork, natural stone, layered acrylic, frosted resin and warm illumination. Selected electronic functions were integrated into the signage while maintaining a consistent visual language across different areas of the hotel.

Project Overview

Located in central Qingdao, Qingdao Haitian Hotel is a five-star luxury seaside hotel serving business travelers, conference guests and leisure visitors. The hotel provides 501 guestrooms, high-end dining facilities, conference spaces and panoramic sea-view leisure amenities.

Its architecture and interior design draw heavily from Qingdao’s coastal character and historical identity. The building facade reinterprets the classic hexagonal pattern of the former Haitian Hotel, while dynamic wave-inspired forms reference the movement and reflection of the sea.

Inside the hotel, blue-brick walls, sailing motifs, natural stone and warm metallic finishes continue the maritime design language. The 2,600 m² column-free ballroom, with an 18 m ceiling height, provides a large-scale venue for conferences and events.

For COSUN SIGN, the challenge was to translate these architectural characteristics into a cohesive hospitality wayfinding system. The signage needed to support guest navigation while fitting naturally into different interior and architectural environments.

Site & Design Challenges

Translating Coastal Character into Hotel Signage

The hotel’s design combines coastal references, traditional Chinese elements and contemporary luxury. A conventional signage approach could easily appear disconnected from the architecture.

Rather than relying on literal nautical graphics, the signage system uses material relationships, proportions, wave-inspired forms and controlled illumination to create a more subtle connection with the hotel’s identity.

Maintaining Consistency Across Hotel Wayfinding Signs

The signage scope extends from entrances and hotel lobby signs to guestrooms, corridors, restaurants, conference rooms and exterior areas.

Each environment has different requirements for scale, visibility, material and mounting. The challenge was to maintain a recognizable design language while adapting individual signs to their locations.

Integrating Smart Functions

Selected guestroom and meeting-room signs incorporate electronic displays, touch-sensitive functions and replaceable information modules.

These components needed to be integrated into custom housings without making the technology visually dominant or disrupting the overall design.

Coordinating with Existing Architecture

Ceiling-suspended signs, layered illuminated structures and electronic components required coordination with architectural, electrical and mechanical conditions.

Hidden wiring, structural support and precise installation tolerances were particularly important where signage interfaces remained highly visible.

Engineering Strategy

COSUN SIGN approached the project as an integrated hotel wayfinding signage system rather than a collection of individual signs.

The engineering strategy focused on four areas:

1. Architecture-Led Coordination

Sign dimensions, proportions, mounting methods and finishes were developed around the surrounding architectural and interior conditions.

This allowed hotel wayfinding signs to become part of the spatial design rather than appearing as independent graphic elements.

2. Location-Based Material Selection

Materials were selected according to both visual character and application requirements. Metal, natural stone, acrylic, resin and glass were combined to respond to different areas of the hotel.

3. Controlled Illumination

A consistent 2700K warm-white LED system was used for illuminated elements. The warm color temperature complements the hotel’s luxury interiors while providing a softer nighttime visual experience.

4. Functional Integration

Electronic displays, touch-sensitive controls and replaceable information modules were incorporated where operational flexibility was required.

This approach allowed the signage system to combine physical wayfinding with selected smart functions without changing the overall visual language.

Material & Engineering Decisions

Refined Metal Finishes

The project uses 316 stainless steel, brass, dark bronze and black stainless steel, with finishes including vertical brushing, gold plating, sandblasted bronze and semi-matte protective treatments.

Different finishes create controlled variations in texture and reflectivity while keeping the signage system visually consistent.

Natural Stone

Dark natural stone and Qing stone were applied to selected architectural and directional signs.

Beveled edges, engraved graphics, painted recesses and stone carving add dimensional detail and connect the signage with the hotel’s architectural material palette.

Layered Acrylic and Resin

Wave-shaped acrylic, frosted resin and ultra-clear glass were combined with metal components for selected illuminated signs.

One distinctive construction combines thin metal panels with thicker frosted resin elements. Concealed 2700K lighting passes through the resin to create a soft diffusion effect, while the metal provides structural definition.

Hotel Room and Conference Signage

Guestroom and conference-area signage was engineered around both information clarity and architectural integration.

The system included hotel room door signs, hotel room number signs and conference room signage, with selected signs incorporating electronic displays or replaceable information modules where room information required greater flexibility.

Signature Craftsmanship

The project required several fabrication techniques to achieve consistent dimensional quality across different signage types.

Metal and Resin Integration

The metal-resin construction required accurate control of component dimensions and interfaces. The metal provides structural rigidity and visual definition, while the resin diffuses concealed LED illumination.

Wave-Shaped Acrylic Layering

Multi-layer acrylic elements were precisely aligned with metal components to maintain consistent spacing and light distribution.

Tight fabrication tolerances were necessary to prevent visible misalignment and uneven illumination.

Engraved Stone Detailing

Selected stone signs feature beveled edges and engraved graphics with filled finishes. The process provides tactile depth while preserving the natural characteristics of the stone.

Precision Metal Fabrication

Metal components were produced through laser cutting, sheet-metal forming, bending and welding. Decorative fasteners and concealed fixing details were incorporated where required to preserve the intended architectural appearance.

Installation & Coordination

Installation was coordinated with the hotel’s architectural, electrical and mechanical conditions.

For ceiling-suspended signs, structural reinforcement and concealed cable routing were arranged to maintain stability while minimizing visible support hardware.

Layered illuminated signs required on-site alignment of acrylic and metal components to maintain consistent spacing and light distribution.

Electronic signage required additional dimensional control around displays, metal housings and surrounding finishes.

For natural stone signage, secure mechanical fixing and carefully detailed stone-to-metal interfaces were used to support long-term stability.

Project Results

The completed hospitality wayfinding system establishes a consistent visual and functional language across Qingdao Haitian Hotel.

From the entrance and hotel lobby signs to guestroom corridors, restaurants and conference areas, the signage integrates materials, typography, illumination, proportions and detailing with the surrounding architecture.

The system supports clear movement through different hotel zones while maintaining the property’s New Chinese luxury character.

At the same time, electronic displays, touch-sensitive functions and replaceable information modules provide the flexibility required in a modern five-star hospitality environment.

The result is a customized hotel wayfinding signage system that supports both guest navigation and the hotel’s overall architectural experience.

Lessons Learned

The Qingdao Haitian Hotel project demonstrates that premium hospitality signage requires the coordination of design, materials, lighting, fabrication and installation rather than relying on any single element.

A key takeaway is the value of combining materials with different physical and visual properties. Rigid metal can provide structure and precision, while translucent resin introduces softness and controlled light diffusion.

This approach can be adapted to luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants, premium commercial interiors and conference facilities where signage needs to perform a practical function while contributing to the surrounding spatial experience.
