Engineering an Integrated Campus Wayfinding & Signage System for a Leading Research University

Project Overview

HKUST (Guangzhou) is a research university campus located in Nansha District, Guangzhou. Completed in 2022, the campus covers approximately 1.1 km², with 480,000 m² of academic, research, administrative and public facilities in Phase I.

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), the campus emphasizes sustainability and smart campus planning. It received the MIPIM Awards 2023 – Best Cultural, Sports & Education Project and the CRED Awards 2023 Gold Award for Social Public Projects.

COSUN SIGN delivered the Phase I campus wayfinding signage system, including indoor and outdoor directional signage, building identification and public information displays. Developed alongside the campus architecture and infrastructure, the system provides bilingual Chinese-English navigation and supports future digital wayfinding upgrades. Today, it helps students, faculty and visitors navigate the campus through a clear, consistent and scalable wayfinding system.

Project Scope

The project includes a fully integrated campus wayfinding system covering:

Engineering Challenges

1. Complex Architectural Integration

Unlike conventional campuses, HKUST (Guangzhou) features extensive curved steel structures, irregular façades and continuously changing architectural geometries.

Standard installation methods could not satisfy structural or aesthetic requirements.

Every installation point required:

Exterior products utilize architectural powder coating, fluorocarbon finishes and brushed metal treatments for enhanced corrosion resistance and UV protection.

Architectural identity elements incorporate illuminated channel letters, front lit channel letters, back lit channel letters, 3D channel letters, and selected sky signage applications to reinforce campus identity while maintaining visual consistency.

Every component was fabricated using CNC precision manufacturing, modular assembly and full-process quality inspection to ensure long-term reliability.

 

Construction & Installation

Before production began, the engineering team completed full-scale site surveys across every installation location.

Customized fixing systems were developed specifically for curved façades and non-standard structures, minimizing on-site modification and improving installation accuracy.

Throughout construction, the signage team coordinated continuously with façade contractors, electrical engineers, interior designers and landscape specialists, allowing the signage system to integrate seamlessly into the campus environment.
