Engineering an Integrated Navigation System for a Coastal Mixed-Use Landmark

Project Name: HCC Haikou Bay Plaza

Time: 2023

Quick Answer

A successful wayfinding signage solution is more than a collection of signs. It integrates architecture, circulation planning, digital information and long-term maintenance into one coordinated navigation network. Project Overview

HCC Haikou Bay Plaza is a landmark waterfront development in Haikou, comprising a 146-metre Grade A office tower, a retail podium and a series of public open spaces. The mix of commercial functions and multiple access points creates continuous movement between indoor and outdoor environments throughout the day.

Rather than treating each area as an independent destination, the navigation system was developed as a site-wide information network. From site arrival and parking to retail, offices and public facilities, every sign follows the same information hierarchy and visual language, helping visitors orient themselves naturally while supporting efficient daily operation.

As an experienced signage manufacturer, COSUN SIGN provided a turnkey wayfinding signage solution covering engineering detailing, precision manufacturing and on-site installation. The completed system integrates shopping mall wayfinding signage, pedestrian guidance, vehicle navigation, tenant information, customized digital signage and property management signage into one coordinated information network.

Engineering Challenges

Complex Multi-Zone Navigation

Office, retail, parking and public spaces each follow different circulation patterns. The design challenge was to establish one clear information hierarchy that connects every destination without increasing visual clutter.

Coastal Environment

Continuous exposure to strong sunlight, humidity, salt-laden air and seasonal storms required durable materials, protective surface finishes and corrosion-resistant structural engineering to reduce long-term maintenance.

Façade Integration

Building identity signs were installed at significant height, while façade signage was mounted on glass curtain walls using concealed support structures that transferred structural loads without affecting the building envelope.

Construction Coordination

Signage installation progressed alongside façade works, MEP engineering, interior finishing and landscape construction. Detailed shop drawings and installation sequencing minimized conflicts between trades and maintained project efficiency.

Engineering Strategy

The navigation strategy focuses on delivering the right information at the right location rather than increasing the number of signs. Visitors are guided through a continuous sequence from site arrival to their final destination.

The integrated system includes:

  • Architectural identity signage
  • Custom pylon signs
  • Site orientation maps
  • Shopping mall directory signage
  • Digital signage kioskand tenant directories
  • Digital kiosksfor commercial information
  • Hanging wayfinding signage
  • Pedestrian direction signs
  • Vehicular guidance
  • Digital parking signs
  • Accessibility and safety signage

Consistent typography, colors, materials and mounting details create a unified visual language across office, retail and public areas while allowing each functional zone to remain easy to identify.

Digital & Physical Wayfinding Integration

Rather than replacing traditional signage, the project combines permanent architectural elements with smart digital signage to improve operational flexibility.

Commercial directories integrate digital wayfinding signage into the physical sign structure, allowing tenant information and operational notices to be updated while preserving a consistent architectural appearance.

Key destinations are supported by digital signage kiosk installations that provide intuitive visitor information without interrupting the surrounding architectural design.

Within the parking garage, digital parking signs display parking availability by zone, helping drivers locate available spaces more efficiently and reducing unnecessary vehicle circulation.

The combination of static signage and customized digital signage supports both everyday navigation and future operational requirements while maintaining a cohesive visual identity.

Material & Manufacturing

Long-term durability guided every manufacturing decision.

Exterior identity signs and custom pylon signs were fabricated from galvanized steel, stainless steel and aluminum with fluorocarbon surface coatings to improve weather resistance in coastal environments.

Interior signage adopts brushed stainless steel finishes coordinated with stone, timber and glass materials, creating a refined architectural appearance throughout the development.

Illuminated signage utilizes energy-efficient LED lighting to provide uniform warm-white illumination, while parking guidance systems incorporate reflective graphics for improved recognition by moving vehicles.

Modular construction allows tenant panels and directory inserts to be replaced independently, reducing maintenance costs and supporting future operational updates.

Installation & Lifecycle Engineering

Different installation environments required different engineering solutions.

High-rise building identity signs were positioned using precision lifting equipment to achieve accurate alignment with the tower façade. Curtain wall signage employed concealed mounting brackets designed to protect waterproof performance while preserving the clean architectural appearance.

Interior installation followed architectural finishing works to avoid damage to completed surfaces, while parking guidance systems were coordinated with lighting, traffic management and fire protection installations.

Concealed fixing methods reduce visible hardware, modular structures simplify future tenant updates and standardized lighting maintains a consistent nighttime appearance across the development.

Project Outcomes

The completed system delivers long-term value for visitors, tenants and property managers.

  • Unified navigation across office, retail, parking and public spaces
  • Consistent architectural identity throughout the development
  • Flexible integration of static signage and commercial digital signage solutions
  • More efficient parking guidance through digital parking signs
  • Simplified tenant information updates
  • Reduced lifecycle maintenance through modular construction
  • Reliable performance under demanding coastal conditions
  • Seamless integration between navigation, architecture and landscape
