New South Wales Railway Station, Australia
The Challenge
Large, multi-entry stations create passenger confusion and congestion during peak periods. The client needed a durable, legible sign program that improved passenger flow, complied with accessibility guidelines, supported future digital content updates and matched the transport authority’s visual identity.
Our Solution
- Comprehensive wayfinding strategy: mapping sight-lines, pedestrian desire-lines and key decision points to optimize sign placement and hierarchy
- Mixed product set: illuminated overhead platform signs, entrance totems, pylon maps, tactile & ADA room/wayfinding signs, and interactive digital kiosks for real-time passenger information.
- Accessibility-first design: large type, high-contrast palettes, tactile surfaces and braille where required to improve wayfinding for visually impaired and mobility-impaired users.
- Digital content platform: digital totems and screens were prepared for future CMS integration so the operator can publish realtime updates and service alerts. Real-time signage reduces passenger uncertainty and increases satisfaction.
Implementation
Production and installation followed a phased program to avoid service disruption: survey & detailed drawings → prototype and sample approval → batch fabrication (aluminium composite, anti-glare acrylic faces, LED illumination) → staged on-site installation and QA. All materials were selected for outdoor durability and low maintenance.
Results & Benefits
Delivered a cohesive wayfinding system that supports smoother passenger circulation, clearer entry/exit flows and better information delivery during service changes. Research shows effective wayfinding design measurably improves passenger flow and reduces confusion at stations—outcomes this project targeted through data-driven sign placement and legibility upgrades.
- Improved navigation clarity across concourse and platform areas.
- Accessibility features aligned with best-practice recommendations for transit environments.
- Prepared infrastructure for future digital content and real-time updates.
