Fujian Changle Donghu Digital Town is a landmark digital economy development located in the core area of Binhai New Area, Changle, Fuzhou, Fujian, China. Covering approximately 3 square kilometers with an investment of more than RMB 20 billion, the project was developed around VR (Virtual Reality), big data, and the digital economy.

As one of China’s early digital towns, Donghu Digital Town brings together industry, innovation, R&D, exhibition, business, and community functions. To support this complex environment, COSUN Sign provided a customized signage system, covering product planning, design, fabrication, installation, and follow up service.

Project Overview

The signage design needed to do more than identify locations. It had to create a consistent visual language for a technology focused destination while helping visitors move easily between different functional areas.

Project Challenges

Turning Digital Concepts into Physical Signage

One of the key challenges was translating abstract ideas such as VR technology, digital innovation, and smart cities into physical signage.

The system needed a strong visual identity without becoming difficult to understand. Metal structures, clean geometric forms, bright colors, and integrated lighting were used to create a modern technology inspired appearance.

Building a Wayfinding Signage System for a Large Mixed Use Area

With a large site containing industrial, commercial, hospitality, residential, and public spaces, visitors needed clear information at different decision points.

The project therefore required a complete wayfinding signage system, rather than a collection of individual signs. Road signs, entrance signs, directories, parking signs, building identification, and indoor signs needed to work together.

Coordinating Multiple Construction Phases

Different buildings and facilities were completed at different times. This created additional coordination requirements for custom signage manufacturing and on site installation.

The signage manufacturer also needed to respond quickly to later requirements, including additional signage for facilities such as hotels, innovation spaces, and the Donghu Tianji building.

1. Custom Outdoor Signage

COSUN Sign developed a range of outdoor signage for roads, entrances, public areas, and buildings.

The system included:

For major locations such as VR Entrepreneurship Avenue, dimensional lettering and branded structures helped strengthen the identity of the digital town.

2. Indoor Signage and Environmental Graphics

The indoor system extended the same visual language into buildings and public facilities.

Key products included indoor wayfinding signs, tenant directories, elevator directories, reception branding, room identification, facility signs, and public information signs.

This created a consistent signage system from the main entrance to individual buildings and interior spaces.

3. Metal Fabrication and LED Illumination

To achieve the required balance between technology and durability, metal signage and stainless steel were used in selected applications.

Integrated LED lighting enhanced important signs at night, while the combination of metallic surfaces and bright colors created a distinctive visual effect.

The solution demonstrates how custom signage manufacturers can combine fabrication, lighting, materials, and graphic design to create signage that works as both information and branding.

4. Scalable Wayfinding Signage

The modular approach made it easier to expand the system as new buildings and facilities were added. This was especially important for a development that continued to grow after the initial signage installation.

From Signage Design to Long Term Support

The cooperation continued after the original project. In 2017, COSUN Sign provided a complete LED illuminated lettering solution for Donghu Tianji Building, including detailed design, customized production, and installation.
