Project Background

Once known as the Huazhong Power Plant, the O·POWER Cultural & Art Center originally supplied electricity to Shenzhen’s Overseas Chinese Town. During redevelopment, the project preserved many of its industrial elements, including oil tanks, pipelines and exposed concrete structures, transforming the former power plant into a vibrant cultural venue while retaining its historic identity.

For this project, the wayfinding signage system needed to achieve more than clear navigation. Every sign had to integrate naturally into the industrial environment, helping visitors move through the site while reinforcing the architectural story behind the adaptive reuse project.

 

Site Challenges

The campus accommodates exhibitions, performances, educational activities and community events, resulting in changing visitor flows throughout the day.

Site analysis showed that simply increasing the number of signs would not improve navigation. Instead, information needed to appear precisely where visitors make decisions, while remaining visually consistent with both the preserved industrial structures and the recognizable Shenzhen Blue architectural identity.

This required a carefully planned wayfinding system that balanced visibility, readability and architectural integration.

 

Engineering Approach

Rather than treating each sign as an individual product, COSUN SIGN developed a fully coordinated wayfinding signage system covering the entire site.

The system includes:

  • Landmark entrance signage and monolith signs
  • Directional pylon signs
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signs
  • Interpretive panels
  • Facility identification signage

All signage follows a unified visual language, creating consistency across the campus.

To strengthen the visitor experience, historical industrial graphics and selected factory slogans were carefully reinterpreted within the signage design. These heritage elements enrich the cultural narrative without competing with the surrounding architecture.

 

Design & Material Strategy

Material selection focused equally on durability and architectural compatibility.

The signage system utilizes durable metal structures for outdoor pylon signs, along with weather-resistant finishes and protective coatings designed for long-term outdoor performance. Surface treatments were selected to complement the site’s exposed concrete, weathered steel and preserved industrial textures rather than overpowering them.

Close coordination between the signage engineering team, architects and landscape designers minimized installation conflicts, streamlined construction and supported easier long-term maintenance.

 

Engineering Results

The completed park wayfinding signage solution creates a continuous visitor experience across the cultural campus.

Instead of functioning as isolated directional signs, the system integrates navigation, interpretation and place identity into one cohesive environment, helping visitors move confidently through exhibitions, public spaces and event areas while reinforcing the site’s industrial heritage.
