Project Story

A shopping centre works best when visitors hardly notice the wayfinding. They arrive, make decisions almost instinctively and spend their time exploring the space rather than searching for directions.

That principle shaped the signage strategy at Huaide MixC Hood, Shenzhen’s largest MixC Hood development. The project combines more than 400 retailers with restaurants, leisure spaces and community facilities across 180,000 square metres of retail space. Two retail buildings are linked by elevated bridges, while a rooftop garden and multiple street-level entrances encourage people to move through the development in different ways. Direct access from Metro Line 12 adds another arrival point, bringing a constant flow of visitors into the centre throughout the day.

COSUN SIGN, a leading signage manufacturer in China, engineered, manufactured and installed the complete wayfinding system, covering exterior identification, interior navigation and commercial digital signage throughout the development.

Different Arrivals, Different Routes

There is no single front door at Huaide MixC Hood.

Some visitors step straight in from the metro station. Others arrive from nearby offices, surrounding neighbourhoods or the underground car park. Many return regularly and already know part of the building, while first-time visitors rely on visual cues to understand the layout.

The signage reflects those different starting points. Building names become visible from surrounding streets. Entrance markers confirm arrival. Inside, shopping mall directory signage, suspended directional signs and digital wayfinding signage appear where choices need to be made rather than at every turn, keeping information clear without dominating the architecture.

Designed Around Everyday Movement

Retail environments are rarely predictable. People pause, retrace their steps, change plans and often discover places they were not looking for.

The wayfinding system supports that behaviour instead of trying to control it.

Large façade letters establish the identity of each building from a distance. Custom pylon signs help visitors choose the right entrance before they reach the site. Within the retail streets, hanging wayfinding signage guides movement through atriums, bridges, escalator halls and lift lobbies.

Permanent signs work alongside smart digital signage, digital signage kiosks and customized digital signage, allowing tenant information to change without affecting the overall navigation system.

Materials That Belong to the Architecture

The signs were designed to feel like part of the building rather than something added afterwards.

Stainless steel, aluminium, acrylic and integrated LED lighting provide durability while maintaining a restrained appearance. Illuminated building letters remain readable across long distances, while illuminated blade signs and light box signs provide clear identification at pedestrian level.

Inside, slim profiles, concealed fixings and carefully controlled illumination reduce visual clutter, allowing retail façades and public spaces to remain the focus.

Installation & Long-Term Use

Installation was coordinated with the final construction programme and phased tenant handovers.

Exterior signs followed completion of the curtain wall, while interior signage was installed as public areas became available. Work within the metro connection and main circulation routes was carefully scheduled to minimise disruption.

Digital displays, lighting modules and information panels are accessible for routine maintenance, making future tenant updates straightforward without replacing complete sign structures.

Engineering Outcomes

The completed system connects metro access, surrounding streets, retail floors, rooftop gardens and parking facilities through one consistent wayfinding language.

Visitors can identify entrances more quickly, understand the layout with fewer decisions and move comfortably between different parts of the development—even during peak trading periods.

The most successful part of the system is also the least noticeable. Once inside, attention shifts naturally from the signs to the retail experience itself.

Engineering Insights

The first decision is made before visitors enter the building.

Clear identification at entrances and arrival points reduces uncertainty from the very beginning.

Wayfinding should support exploration, not interrupt it.

Information appears where decisions happen, allowing people to move naturally through the retail environment.

The smallest signs often carry the greatest responsibility.

Room identification, parking guidance and safety signage quietly support the daily operation of a large commercial destination.
